Contractors and interior designers suggest ordering an extra 10 to 15% extra materials—like wallpaper, tile, and others—just in case something doesn’t go according to plan. In fact, 20% is an even better number, says Mary Patton, of Mary Patton Design in Houston. “Human error is very real, and even though it’s a little more money, it saves time,” she notes. In other words, if you hang wallpaper incorrectly, no worries. At least you’ll have spare pieces to replace the mess with.
But what to do with the extra materials you have leftover? Though some vendors will allow returns, others might not. And no one will take back an opened wallpaper roll. Instead of harboring clutter, get the most bang from your renovation buck by
